India 2009

Ok everyone....(those of you who still pop in here after...ahem...over 2 years!!!) ... i did write a blog at the beginning of this year about last years travels in India, but somehow never finished it.  I am feeling a wave of new creative energy and it may just be time to resurrect this blog! Yay!

Jan 2010
It feels as if my whole life has indeed reconfigured and i am writing this from a very different place in terms of my perspective on life and nutrition.

So, to get back into the swing of blogging, i thought i'd share a little about our 3 month journey in India at the beginning of 2009.  Here's a summary of how we stayed healthy whilst travelling in India (I was not completely raw by any stretch of the imagination and i love indian cuisine!... but i was certainly mindful of getting as much of my food in it's wholesome raw state as possible!)

The supplies i travelled with from the uk:
Nori Sheets
Small bag of chia seeds
Small bag of spirulina
Sea Spaghetti
Small amount of crystal manna
Lightweight bamboo bowl

Supplies purchased in India:
large metal bowl
knife
chopsticks
bags of raisins and cashew nuts
small bottle of olive oil
black tahini, bee pollen and honey (Goa)
himalayan crystal salt (Amma's ashram)

A small chopping board would have come in very handy aswell!  We were travelling very light and the supplies of superfoods were all in small bags not for daily consumption.  Chia is such a good travel food because it swells up in water, so a little goes a long way.  It also helps with hydration, as it holds water in the body.

In the South (Goa, Kerala and Hampi) fruit was abundant!   We had daily fruit juices from our favourite juice bar.  I particularly loved putting spirulina into pineapple juice.  I bought lots of fruit and made fruit salads, and fruit/ chia seed concotions.  Tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots were usually available for making salads, although it was 3 weeks before i found some lettuce and spinach to wrap my nori sheets around!

In the North, greens were amazing and plentiful!   Still, it was hard to find a decent salads in restaurants, so I made my own in my makeshift kitchen.  Dried seaweeds and crystal manna were nutritious additions and made my raw meals complete.  Nuts and dried fruits were also abundant, my favourite find being the giant pine nuts in the shell!

Staying hydrated was really important.  We would squeeze a little lemon or lime into bottled water for electrolytes, and to bring it alive :)  Wherever green coconuts were available,  i was one very happy traveller.  If you're really clever and have a little funnel, you can go to a coconut vendor and fill up a litre or 2 litre bottle....that's the water of quite a few coconuts, and it'll keep you going for a day and a night (depending on the ambient temperature, it will go off in the heat).

So, to sum up, if you want to stay healthy whilst travelling in India....keep well hydrated, eat your fruit & veggies, pack some light supplies of superfoods & choose the cooked foods you eat wisely.....so simple :)
